Springs Openers Doors

Garage Doors in Woodlawn ParkHeavy door.
Steady hands.

A residential garage door can weigh as much as two grown adults, and the springs above it are wound to carry exactly that load. Our technicians in Woodlawn Park work with winding bars, clamps and stands, secure the door before touching tension, and run it through full cycles before they call the job finished. Calls from Cheapside, Lambs Corners and Peacock Point are covered too.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 57 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 57% of homes in Haldimand County were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Wood door frames in an older house settle and swell over the decades, which can leave a door rubbing on one side. Rather than forcing the opener, the technician trues the tracks, adjusts the jamb seals and sets the door so it travels freely again.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 84% of homes in Haldimand County (2021 Census).Detached houses often have a room over the garage, a bedroom or an office, which makes the garage door part of the heated envelope. An insulated door, snug weatherstrip and a fresh bottom seal keep that room comfortable and the furnace from working overtime in winter.

Off-Track Garage Door Reset

Technician in navy clothes shining a small flashlight at the upper track and hinge of a closed white sectional garage door. — Woodlawn Park
The call
One side of the door hangs a hand's width lower than the other. A steel cable is drooping in a loop beside the track instead of running tight to the drum, and the whole door looks tilted in the opening.

Garage Door Hinge Replacement

A person examines a central hinge joining two sections of a closed garage door. — Garage Door Hinge Replacement, Woodlawn Park
The call
On the old wood door, one hinge has pulled away from the panel, dragging a screw and a chunk of soft timber with it. The panel sags slightly at that joint and the door bumps at the curve instead of gliding.

Garage doors with extension springs need pulleys and safety cables in good condition. Worn pulleys chew through cables, and missing safety cables are a hazard. We renew these parts alongside the springs whenever we work on that style of door.

  1. Part 1The panels

    Garage Door Panel Replacement

Rust has crept along the bottom edge of the lowest section. What began as bubbling paint is now a soft, flaking strip, the seal retainer is working loose, and a screwdriver pressed against the worst spot goes through the steel.

  2. Part 2The springs

    Torsion Spring Replacement

You heard a sharp bang from the garage, and now the opener hums for a second and gives up. The door lifts a few centimetres at most, then settles back down as if something very heavy is holding it in place.

  3. Part 3The cables

    Garage Door Cable Replacement

After years of slushy winters the cables look thinner near the bottom brackets, with rust streaks running down the door where they attach. The door still works, but the frayed wires catch your glove when you brush past.

  4. Part 4Tracks and rollers

    Garage Door Roller Replacement

One of the little wheels along the edge of the door has a chunk missing, another sits crooked in its hinge, and there is a fine grey dust on the floor under the track where plastic has been wearing away.

  5. Part 5The opener

Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair

The door goes up perfectly. Coming down is the trouble: partway to the floor it stops, climbs back to the top, and the light on the opener blinks at you.

Garage Door Safety Inspection. A tenant mentioned the door is louder than it used to be.

Short answers

Will the door be as good as it was before?

In most cases it comes back better, because the reset includes truing the track, replacing worn rollers and correcting the misalignments that had been building unnoticed. The exception is a section creased by an impact: it may work perfectly well after the reset yet keep a visible dent, and the technician will tell you whether it is sound or worth replacing at some point. You are shown the door running before the visit ends.

What information helps when I book the visit?

Whether the door is closed, open or stuck; where the noise or the gap appears and roughly how high; whether you can see a cracked, bent or loose hinge and whether it is at the edge or the middle; whether the door is a single or a double, steel or wood, and how many panels it has; and whether anything hit the door lately. A photo of the hinge and its stamped number is useful.

What information helps when I call?

Where the damage is, at floor level, near the curve or overhead; what caused it if you know, such as a bumper or a ladder; whether the door is closed, open or stuck partway; whether any roller has come out of the channel; whether there is a spring above the door or springs along the tracks; and the door's rough size. A photo of the damaged length and of a bracket with its screws is very useful.

Will the springs be checked as part of cable work?

Always. Cables and springs are one system, and a spring that is weak, mismatched or wound short is a frequent reason a cable goes slack in the first place. The technician looks for breaks, measures the spring against the door weight, and confirms the correct number of turns when winding back. If a spring needs replacing, that is explained and offered as its own decision rather than folded in unannounced.
